I don't care what anyone says-- the 70s had it all over the 80s when it came down to the Velveeta Quotient. Witness this garish spectacle of the octogenarian Mae West being romanced by Timothy Dalton in the 1978 comedy/musical/barfical Sextette. Delicious!

How did he ever land the role of James Bond? J/K - I thought he was awesome in The Beautician and the Beast.

Mae "sang" it best at the end...

"Stop!"

barfical = BRILLIANCE!

The clip did make me feel decidedly queasy.

Mae admitted in an interview that she gave herself a daily enema to maintain that youthful appearance. And I thought it was just vaseline on the camera lense. No disrespect to Ms. West - she is definitely in the Pantheon in my book.

christina - she stopped in the name of love. Yeah, it's surreal, innit? I mean, she was 85 years old and playing a 28 year old newlywed

mechuahua - Well, for 85, she was holding it together quite well, in a way, but she does look a little alarming, all that vaseline notwithstanding. It DOES look a little foggy in there, though, doesn't it? Yup, she was an original.

Someone told me this was a Mae West quote, and I hope they're right, but I can't find it anywhere. Something to the tune of "Last night I had a dream I was being chased by a bull who wanted to make love to me, but I was tired, so I ran." *hee*

I object mainly to Timothy Dalton. Man can't sing! Or at least he's not doing it here.

Hey, I liked Timothy Dalton in "The Lion in Winter." Not really anything since then.

christina - I actually like him. :) But I wouldn't pay to hear him sing.

buck - What can I say? I'm just a giver.

g bro - The entire cast was superb in TLIW, loved Anthony Hopkins in that sinister (practical?) role. Great script, that.

Wasn't he married to Vanessa Redgrave? Those are good connects, I guess.

My opinion of Dalton has even further deteriorated at the sight of this, and with that...uh..."singing" I don't believe that he was acting much - I'll bet he would have gone for the Ancient One - Alice Cooper certainly would have.

Can't convince me otherwise - the 70s were truly the ultimate in tacky. But if you get nostalgic, you can still buy those polyester shirts with the Starsky and Hutch collars at Salvation Army.

Creepy, yet oddly mesmerizing.

But I liked Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre.
