And speaking of pets...

The time has come to get a proper upright vacuum cleaner. BlowfuzzyVonSassy swears by her dyson per hair thingy. Anyone have a great experience with a vacuum which you'd highly recommend? I'd appreciate your input.

Consider this another approval of the Dyson. We replaced our very aged and un-sucky Kenmore canister vacuum with a Dyson DC25. One trip across the living room (perhaps 12x12?) and the bin on the machine was full. I dumped it in the trash while the cats looked at me and said, "Hey! Why are you throwing away the new kitten before we meet her??"

The amount of hair it picks up (and dust and grime along with it) is unbelievable.

Yes, they're expensive. But they're warrantied for five years, and if you shop carefully, you can often find them on sale in the $350-400 range, and sometimes with a little Dyson-style Dustbuster-esque hand-vac included.

Hoover Pet Cyclone!! My friend Meg has one, plus two cats, and it gets everything, every last little cat hair (and she's a neat freak). I'd love to get one, but Mr. Greenthumb is rather attached to his old, 25-lb Kirby. :P I get a good workout running the ol' thing...

I have a Kirby. It's HEAVY, but it works very well. If I were you, I'd got Dyson or Kirby and nothing else.
YMMV

I have had three Dysons, all of them have been excellent... although the canister Dyson don't do too well on carpet!

We've got a Simplicity canister. It picks up a scary amount of dog hair (Sadie blows her coat several times a year. It's like a Siberian snowstorm here.) Since we've gone to the concrete floor in the den, though, a nice Shop-Vac is more handy and costs less. It doesn't necessarily put out exhausted air that's cleaner than the room air, like the Simplicity, though. It does see more use these days, however.

Dyson! We have three cats, three kids, a German Shepherd who is perpetually blowing coat, and we had a bunny.

No fur issues in our house since we got the purple Dyson!

Dyson, hands down! My wife actually sucked up a sock with one, they're that powerful. Emptying and cleaning them are a breeze.

Dyson! We have the DC 14 "animal" version and it does a great job getting cat hair and other stuff out of the carpets. My son's future mother in law just got a Dyson Ball and swears by it.

I have the original cyclone vacuum, the Amway CMS1000.

The Dysons are nice (and overpriced, IMO), but consider this...

I inherited mine from my dad, as he has a central vacuum system now. It is 20 years old. It is still running beautifully. I just serviced it, replacing a couple of cracked plastic pieces and replacing all the filters. Every part for it is still available.

From what I can tell, someone bought the design and rights from Amway, and it's now called ClearTrak. New units are available for $371, including all the accessories/attachments. It's a hell of a better deal than the Dyson, IMO.

I love the Oreck XL. It's expensive. I paid $800.00 for mine. But it comes with a 21 year warranty. They clean the vacuum and replace the belt every year. That's included in the price.
