You know how the girl in your office says she'll never fall in love again and then announces her engagement the next week?

So I told you before I was actively seeking a companion dog for Praline. My criteria were a small dog wot can be a lively and fun playmate for teh puppeh. I was coming to the conclusion this might involve another terrier. The two breeds I swore I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole were Dachshund and Chihuahua.

Took Miss P to the vet Thursday to get her 15 week shots, and I discussed getting a second dog, and compatibility issues with Praline. She told me they had the last two of a litter of pups Dr. Parker rescued, and one of them would be great. I met them and liked them, and told her I'd take the boy if no one else did Friday.

Turns out, they're chiweenies. Yup. Chihuahua AND dachshund.
Nice.

Nope, no name yet. Pancho? Taco? Fritzy? Longue Carbine?

He looks more wiener than chi (and that's a mercy), and he's very good-natured and sweet. Then again, he's a baby and more personality will come out in the coming weeks. Miss P is hell for leather to menace him, and the two of them are a handful, for now and can only be together with very close supervision. When he's big enough to kick her ass, she's really going to be in trouble. She's been pretty gentle, generally, but he IS so much smaller than her. I'm a very present mother hen when they're together, and I'm careful to try to dote on Praline. She doesn't seem jealous, but I don't want her to feel her place in my heart is threatened, either.

Anyhoo, more to come. Wish me luck.

How about "Kugel". It is, I think, the shortened German word for bullet.

Kugel is also a Jewish casserole ;>

I think Carbine and Praline would be a great combo!

Oh, he's adorable! I once adopted an older Chiweener dog, he was the sweetest thing! Bubba never even barked and had just a great personality. Only one thing to watch out for if yours (like mine) ends up with the long Dachshund back: as they get old they tend to get slipped disks (especially when jumping off furniture) which can lead to total or partial paralysis of the hind legs. Happened to my old Bubba twice. The first time I got him to he vet quickly enough and there was no permanent damage; the second time he wasn't so lucky. He ended up having two speeds: his front legs would walk normally, his hind legs literally only half as fast (looked funny as hell). At least he wasn't able to jump any more at that point, so no more damage afterward. Hopefully, you're about 10 to 13 years away from that with your new puppeh, and maybe his legs will get a bit of Chihuahua length yet! :) Too cute. Can't wait to read more about your two pups. Congratulations! (Hope Praline doesn't teach him how to play with shoes.) ;P

Oh come on. He's light caramel colored...but is Caramel too girly sounding?

I'm sure they'll do well together, when he is big enough to give as good as he gets.

Are you MAD, woman? Having that much cute in one small area could cause an awwww-singularity!

Nacho...as in Not'cho Dog!

brigid - excellent suggestion, and one which will stay on the short list

liz - well, that's good to know. Carbine is pretty cool with the French-fried pronunciation

miz minka - Wow! Cool story. Thanks for sharing. Yeah, the traditional wiener spinal problems was the primary reason I said "never" on that breed. Maybe the mix will help stave off those problems. :)

george h - you're so clever. Now Chorizo is definitely on the list

diane - if there's one thing I know from the last 2 months, it's that they grow up really, rilly fast! Caramel would be perfect if he were a girl. I was even thinking of Mocha, but that's too girly, too. We'll see. He's a funny boy, so he needs a funny, fake-dignified name. Gatsby? Still thinking...

pdb - am I mad? Clearly, I am unwell! Yeah, it's a lot of cuteness, but it's counterbalanced by some ugly behaviours!

mushy - CUTE! That's going on the list.

OMG. He is ADORABLE.

You need another sweet name, like of a Mexican or German candy

breda said...

although maybe a "spicy" Mexican name - so you'd have a sweet (Praline) and a spicy.

A Chiweenie! Even the breed name is cute! And isn't he just so adorable? You must be drowning in cuteness right now.

Hugo is a name that could embrace both his Latin and German heritage.

WTF. Why all the concern about a freaking dog. Don't you have a husband that you should be mentioning in these "blogs" instead of just dogs and all about you. I bet you treate your husband like a dog and treat your dog like a husband!

phlegmfatale said...

detail medic - I thought so.

breda - good ideer! Chorizo was pretty cute.

barbara - It IS a cute breed name. He's a dandy little fellow, too. They are adorable and they are really playing well. I'm going to be hyper-vigilant, though, for quite a while, until he's a comparable size to her. Yes, he'll have a long string of names by the time I'm through embracing his and many other cultures. :P

anonymous - After your leisurely perusal of my archives,(I see you're in town! come by and visit me sometime. I'll catch you up on my life) thanks for stepping up and leaving your kind comments, albeit behind the bold sobriquet of "anonymous." You'll have noticed my blog's subtitle is "a shoe-obsessed woman, her dog and her life," and-- as promised-- that's what I write about. I try to treate[just trying to make you feel more at home here, poppet!] everyone I meet and know with dignity and respect, meaning I also don't go around lobbing poison barbs at people anonymously. I wish you the very best. I'll try and deal with the disappointment that you won't be wanting to read my blog in future. Ta ta, darling!

P.S. - jealousy looks really ugly on people. You should try to work on that.

Dear anonymous, go get your own blog, you can give a sermon all about you and the proper behavour of a wife so we can all not read it. A
p.s. bite me

What's with the anonymous haters lately? Losers.

Anyhoo, Diane beat me to it, since I took one look at Pup and thought, "Caramel!"

How about "Werther?" Y'know, like the caramel candy, and "Leiden des Jungen Werther," by Goethe? Plus it sounds dignified, too.

Or Truffle. I sent that one your way for Praline! Toffee? Cilantro?
Salsa? He looks awfully cute, whatever name you pick!

phlegmfatale said...

A - damn skippy!

christina - they have no life, obviously, and don't know whereof they speak.

Yeah, caramel is tempting, because he's certainly sweet, but I want a GUY name for him. Guapo - handsome. Sanchez. Guillermo. Schultz.
all are possibilities. Today, JPG suggested something mole, and I said mole schnitzel.

How about Chuy for the new addition?

Miz Minka said...

Methinks you should post a video of teh puppeh to help us get ideas for names -- so we can see his personality, ya know!

Otherwise, I'd vote for Nacho. It's Mexican sounding and, you know, macho. ;)

phlegmfatale said...

CHUY is fab and is going on the short list! Thanks! :)

miz minka - will try - need to figure that out from me phone. He's a dandy little thing. Nacho is pretty fab.

Ann diPomazio said...

He is adorable. Nico was almost a Chuy. I Like Chuy.

Buck said...

Late to the party, I am. But of all the suggestions so far... I like "Chuy" the best. With Caramel as a middle name, the last being your own, of course. ALL dogs should have two names. It's only natch'al, ya know. ;-)

Adorable. Maybe the Daschund part can salvage the Chi part...
