I adore Sarah Vaughan...

... and of all the new young singers in my lifetime, no one has embodied the same velvety soulfulness as Sarah until Amy Winehouse. She had her own style, but it was very much a nod to the great mid-twentieth century singers of jazz and blues.

Here she is in 2006 on Jools Holland singing the standard torch song "TEnderly." She was 22 at the time.

In my former life I worked briefly with Miss winehouse. Obvious problems aside she was rather well liked by all who worked with her including lowly crew members and variuos workers usualy below the notice of such eminences. R.I.P.

Thanks for that, Thud. I've heard some nice stories about how she was kind to complete strangers. Bless her tormented soul. I think she was lovely and I wish someone could have saved her from herself. :(
