I was thinking what people need to do is just throng the streets and physically prevent the rioters from making mayhem - let them know how very outnumbered they truly are, and that society as a whole means to prevent their mischief. It's great that people have come together the morning after to clean up the debris, but that's not enough. I saw a bit on BBC about Sikh gentlemen standing ready in front of their temple last night.
Sikh are decent people with very respectful but strict social codes, and zero tolerance for baloney. I like what these men are doing, and I think there's a lot to learn from their example. And I'd like to see those pantywaist rioters pick a fight with them. The thought of it makes me giggle.

I cannot imagine trusting the robber that he wouldn't come upstairs. I'd have a baseball bat and a shovel.
The Sikhs in the UK riots will turn out to be the Koreans from the Rodney King riots, the ones that were self-reliant and didn't allow their homes/workplaces to be vandalized or looted.
Apparently a group of Turks and Kurds also stood up to a bunch of "hoodies" (as the British police blogs are calling them). Something about a wall of angry guys carrying the knives they use in their food-shops tends to have a, hmmm, calming effect on riotous young males. The rioters did a rapid 180 and left for safer territory.

I guess the cops could always Sikh the temple guards on the rioters . . .
;-)
Sikhs are definitely on my List of People Not to F--* With.
Good on 'em for having the self respect to stand up for themselves.

I work with a couple of Sikhs. They get it.
One convenience store near me is owned and operated by a Sikh family. The last time they were targeted by strong-arm robbery I am given to understand it became a pinata party for the witless goblin.
When one of the tenets of someone's religion involves requiring them to carry a bladed weapon at all times, it's a good sign that that is someone you don't want to mess with.
Surprisingly, even the UK hasn't taken that away from them (yet).
BBC radio also had a report about a group of "football" fans guarding Manchester's City Center. Rioters vs Soccer fans wonder who'd win that one?
Have you noticed that the people standing up to resist the rioters are, almost one and all, recent immigrants? Sikhs, Kurds, Turks?
They haven't been "anglicized" yet, I'm guessing.
Bob is right! And the Sikhs are NOT people to screw with...
