Winecups.

I don't know what you call this phase of cactus growth, but I think it's lovely, even though they may require amputation. All the new buds which popped out this spring have turned a lovely claret color and seem on the verge of doing something fabulous. I could be wrong, though.

Today I'll try to scrub most of the Kiz2 off my arms before I go back to work. I got a lot of scrubbing and painting done this weekend. I would have loved to laze about all weekend instead, but there's so much left to be done, and I'm looking forward to having things, clean, freshly painted and in order. It's a nice feeling, making progress.

Saturday I went to nearby city on the errand of picking up a gift for a pre-teen birthday girl. I went into the store and asked the clerk if they have in stock the DVD of the Jonas Brothers' concert. He said he'd check with a vacant expression. I hurriedly added "it's not for me" and he said "they all say that." *harumph!

Have a great week!

It's none of the clerk's business WHO the DVD is for. His/her job is to satisfy the customer (you), by making a sale. Thereby bringing money into the store, thereby validating his continued employment.

Known as cactus fruit. Those are seed pods. In certain areas, they grow much, much larger and are eaten somewhat like a pomegranate. In Mexico and Malta, I think they're the national fruit; seems like it, anyway.
They're quite mild, something like a guava, and full of seeds. I prefer mine sieved so that I get only the pale green jelly and no seeds. Quite a nice jelly can be made from them; good with lamb, I'm told, but I'm not a sheep eater in any form, and like the jelly with pork tenderloin.

Those are cactus apples, and if you decide to pluck them off, I'll do some digging and dig up my great grandmother's Cactus Jelly recipe.

It's a lot of work but it's oh so good!

Down on the gulf coast they call them cactus tunas (tun-a).
The y amke a mild bugundy-ish wine, too.

Maybe the Jonas Bros rock. I can't think of a tune of theirs now...I suppose I haven't heard one, but you never know.

I hope you will get over to emmatree and give a little support. She's declaring her conservative bonafides to a very liberal following.

That's a Prickly Pear cactus. All those bubs are fruit that will make a nice jelly or a number of other tasty treats.
