Rather proud of this one...

The house came with an impressive collection of rocks, fossilized and more recent shells, mineral specimen, arrowheads and the like. I think they are so pretty, and I've always been one to pick up rocks here and there myself so I appreciate the collection and like having it around. I'd been wondering how to display them in a way which won't gather dust but where they are shown to best advantage.

In Dallas a couple weeks ago, I found this jar at Ross, about 18" tall including lid, and knew there must be something I needed it for. Waddayaknow if I didn't have a brainwave Sunday morning, and I sprang out of bed before 8am to get started.

Here's the result. I think it's lovely. It's a little hard to tell, but the yellowish thing up top is a warthog tooth, the bearer of which was dispatched from earthly realms by the former owner of the home.

Now to find the right display vessel for all the shells/cartridges/bullets around the place... hmmm.

Nicely displayed.

As for the cartridges, et al, a nice shallow wall frame/box (or two or several) with a glass front would work well.

There are many more out in the carport and under the cactii in the front flowerbed. Careful of buzzworms if you go looking, though.

And if you lay the rocks out on a shelf, you must orient them to the cardinal directions, with black at the north, white in the east, yellow in the south, and turquoise in the west.
Otherwise your gummy bears will unrubberize, your rice will be sticky, your bathwater will be orange, and other dire consequences.

My wife made a similar jar, but she only put a few shells, added some water, placed some kind of really low maintenance plant in a jar that fit on top of the big jar and added a fighting fish in the bottom jar. The result was a companion that she kept in her bathroom for years next to the sink. I forget his name, but a little food and a monthly water water change was all he needed.

Purty... :-)

VERY pretty and decorative. I tried something similar with a glass fishbowl, but the result was merely a glass fishbowl full of rocks.

*sigh*

We all have our talents, I suppose! And it's obvious what mine aren't.

My husband and I suffer from the same affliction -- i.e., rocks and shells and pine cones and other purty things "jump" into our pockets and want to come home with us. I have a few jars full all over the place! I like to scour the GoodWill store for suitable containers for our collections. :)
