A Florida man dove into the water to save his 14 pound rat terrier Jake from a shark. The 5 foot shark surfaced and chomped nearly the whole dog in one bite. The owner dove in and balled up his fist and pummeled the shark on the back and the shark let go of the dog.

Now, look at this pup - see that gremlin- like look? Knowing the terrier spirit like I do, Jake probably picked the fight.

Great story. I love that among the news bits of dogs doing heroic things to save their people, there are people who lay it all on the line to save their pets.

Dawgs, at least MY dawgs, are very protective of me. I have no doubt that Tipper or Boo would attack anyone, hooman or canine who threatened me. With loyalty and love like that, how could I NOT try to rescue them from danger?

Obviously, I'm not the only one who feels this way, nu? I know you woould wade into the fray if any animal or hooman dared to threaten one of YOUR dawggie bebes.

Wow. That took some balls on the part of the owner. I wonder if Jake will be scared of the water now?

What a great story! And yeah, I'd have gone to great lengths to rescue MY dogs, too... back in the day. It's only right.

hollyb - Yeah, I'd do anything I could to save my pups. I'll start by not letting them venture into shark-infested waters.

christina - like I said, I'm betting Jake picked the fight, and I'll bet he'd do the same again, given the chance.

buck - Yeah, it was a great story. Good guy. Or crazy! Yup. it's only fitting.

Afraid? Jake's version-

"I was kicking that shark's ASS, and then my stupid caterer had to jump in, so I had to save him..."

I think I would do the same for my chihuahua...but then her standard "protection" behavior is to bark at anything new, then run behind me and look up at me to see if she should be scared.
Seriously, she trusts me to protect her, and God help any man or beast that tries to hurt her. At 6.5 lbs, she can't do much for herself.
