State and local? Not so much. How I can have the federal tax liability I had and yet still owe a huge chunk of change to both state and local boggles my mind.

What would you expect from MSNBC? If they can't find an article to match their preconceptions, they'll make one.
Maybe that's what happened here. I believe they were caught paying for a report once before with a guaranteed POV.
Bear in mind it include those who pay NO taxes.
Half the population doesn't pay income tax. Of course they thinks its fair.
