Oh, if only.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating: just because you know five ways to Sunday to get between note A and note B does not mean you are a good singer. The Star Spangled Banner is a technically very challenging song to sing, with its sustained notes and wide range. Just because you can sing a million notes in 3 seconds doesn't mean you technically have the chops to sing the National Anthem, so please, pretty please-- with melon-farming sugar on top-- please stop. Now.

Coulda been worse.
Coulda been Roseanne scratching herself.
(Though by worse, I mean "just barely worse.")
Oh please, it wasn't so bad. There have been singers with similar anthems, including Whitney Houston. The best thing was the "twilight's last reaming"... awesome...she truly made our boring national anthem sung to a drinking song, even better.
SCI-FI - Ew.
Anonymous - i count Whitney H among chief offenders. I do concede Christina had on excellent shoes and I'm happy you enjoyed her performance.
Maybe I'm just weird, but I not only didn't like her performance, but I hated halftime as well.
If I wanted a creative interpretation of how someone thinks it should be sung, I'll get a 5-year-old.
When I listen to the national anthem on a worldwide stage, I want to hear it sung at the right pace, with no embellishments, no nonsense, no personal touches.
Just sing the damned song right!
Aside from the obvious profane meaning, perhaps Christina was expressing the subliminal meaning as well, that our once proud and free country is getting shafted by the DHS. I think it was no mistake at all. She either deliberatley sang it that way (or subconsciously expressed it, a freudian slip.) Bravo!
I'm SO glad I didn't hear/see that. You know that's my biggest pet peeve!
Agree with SF... It sucked, then got worse at half time... Aguliera SHOULD be imbarassed to no end.
Hearing this makes me glad I didn't watch.
Josh
I didn't watch the game either but decided to find out what all the ruckus was about. After seeing the video, I must say that Aguilera's mostly contorted visage perfectly describes my reaction to her disgraceful butchering of our national anthem (words and melody). Ouch. Beyond painful. She should be ashamed.
