I'll've Mantids.

I suppose along with the coyotes and rattlesnakes, it's to be expected I'd see a lot more mantids around here. I've never seen such a preponderance of walking sticks, though. They are marvelous. This one was about 6 inches long. I hope he noms up a bunch of the fat mosquitos. You should have seen one houseguest on mosquito patrol with my handheld bug-zapper.

Good times.

A praying mantis in your house or near it is supposed to be good luck. Don't zap them.

Hmm... That looks more like a stick-bug than a praying mantis to me. Still an insect-eater, though. :)

Note to self: never respond to blog posts after a night of insomnia. I didn't even "see" the text below the picture, only the bug and the title! D'oh! :P

I was at a friend's house, he had a mantis guesting in his car port. It was cheap fun, drinking Lone Star (his beer)and watching the preacher catch flies.

We intentionally leave the back light on for the geckoes (non-native species- Mediterranean geckoes). Some of them have gotten pretty large over the summer. The downside is that I've found little charcoal-y gecko bits in the breaker box and that has resulted in the replacement of about 8 breakers out in the garage.

Nice walkingstick. We've always considered the presence of those and mantids to be a good omen.

Rabbit.

Walking stick! I took Tai-Mantis Kung Fu in Jr. High for self-defense because the disparity in size between a 7th grader and a 9th grader was too scary - as was my big brother...

b woodman - healthy, indeed. Here's to natural mosquito control.

Anonymous - I would never intentionally kill any mantid. I'm lucky anything will help me with the skeeters.

MizMinka - I've done that very thing before myself. :)

ben - I suppose that's as edifying as any other beer-drinking activity!

Rabbit - Poor geckoes, but I'm sure they all had a good run of it in the rich pickings at your back door. If they are good luck, then I'm doubly lucky - had one on the front porch as I came in a few minutes ago. he was mid-nom on a moth and turned his head to me as if to say "do you mind?

DirtCrashr - Tai Mantis? Wow. That's a new one on me!
