...speaking of Star Trek-- what do you think of the ideer of the new Star Trek prequel thingie?

Here's my problem with it-- we already have the ST films with the aging original class and the beefed-up budget for set design and cinematography. We will now be expected to go back to pre-series era Star Trek characters with a super-slick degree of technology and design values. To me, if the producers of the prequel had even the tiniest mote of irony about them, they would have found a big-budget way to emulate the geeky analog adolescence of the birth of sci-fi tv without lampooning it.

Star Trek was one of the handful of shows I watched and loved as a kid in the 70s. A marked characteristic of the original series was its ability to take side-trips to the riduculously sublime. I think if a kid today sees the entire series in order beginning with the prequel, they won't get what was so fabulous about the original series. My thought is that the wide-eyed earnestness of later Star Trek films coupled with the luvved-up prequel will spell a whole that is less than the sum of its parts.

Other than the thought of the immaculate Simon Pegg as young Scotty, I can't wrap my brain around the idea of finding enjoyment in this film. I could be wrong, and someday when I see this film, I'll admit it if I am.

Come to that, I hope I am wrong.

Simon Pegg might be enough to save it, but I'm not holding my breath.

It will suck, but I will see it anyway because I too was imprinted by TOS in the 70s.

What a "where no man has gone before" BAD idea. Some places simply should not be visited.

I can't WAIT to see it! Just like I loved "Enterprise".
Plus, Zachary Quinto is HOT. (he plays young Spock)
And yes, I've seen the entire OS, the entire STNG, some of DS9, none of Voyager, though I'm planning on watching that sometime soon.

Uh-oh... Zachary Quinto as a young Mr. Spock??? I s'pose I'll have to see it now... ZQ is young enough to be my son (um, or should I say I'm old enough to be his mother, yikes), but me sure likes lookin' at him in "Heroes." ;)

I never missed an episode of TOS; had a huge crush on Mr. Spock. Come to think of it, I do believe Leonard Nimoy might have been my very first celebrity crush. I watched all the other Star Trek incarnations in their entirety as well (TNG, DS9, Voyager), but only the first season of Enterprise; I can't stand the sight of Scott Bakula.

We enjoyed the first season and half the second season. Then we got a color teewee box and REALLY enjoyed it.

You know if Simon's in it, I'll be watching. Man could fart in a bag and call it a movie and I would still give it a 3 out of 5.

I didn't really watch the series growing up and have only seen a handful of the movies, so I have no idea what to expect. I'm guessing teh success of the Batman and James Bond "prequels" prompted this one, hopefully this one will be as good as those and not alienate the true fans.
