First day of school...

Tonight was my first day in class. It went really well. It's the course I've been dreading since I first enrolled at UNT as a music major in the mid-90s: my maths requirement for whatever degree I'll eventually earn...

The professor tells corny jokes, and that's actually fun. He seems to think even the dimmest among us have hopes for grasping the concepts, so perhaps there is yet hope for me.

I did well with Geometry but struggled with Algebra in grade school, so I've been dreading this. I'm going to study every day and hope I can surprise myself by actually learning this stuff.

*fingers crossed*

You will be FINE!

If it makes you feel better, I sucked great big hairy monkey balls at math in high school. I was so bad, my math teacher told me before the entire class that "my mathematical train had left the station and I was still standing on the platform." XD He was a jerk.

Calculus and trigonometry were the big killers for me.

Remember: "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally." The rest should be easier than you imagined.

You go girl!
I survived 2 semesters of algebra for my viticulture degree, and I hadn't taken maths since I was 16!!!
You'll survive.

Practice.

Practice the sample problems.

Practice the ones you did for homework.

I did similar.

Turned out the advantage of adulthood first in valuing the skill in itself, second in having an attention span longer than a marmoset's, and third of its being my own idea helped a lot.

Didn't do better than a B, though.

My advice would be 'don't sweat it.' Algebra is not nearly as hard as it's made out to be. You already use it, you just don't know it. Have you ever looked at your gas gauge and figured out if you have enough gas to finish your current trip without refueling? Ever stood in a grocery store and figured out for yourself which was cheaper, the small, large, or Super Economy size of something?

Congratulations, you've used algebra.

It really is that easy.
