Actually, I was reading that his early film career was kiboshed by the inability of early film to "read" blue, and his eyes were pale blue which made his eyes look eerie on film. He started being shot on a special kind of blue-sensitive film and that made all the difference. He apparently wrote/directed/produced tons of stuff in Hollywood - incredibly talented and prolific performer.
