Those are seed pods. In c...Known as cactus fruit. Those are seed pods. In certain areas, they grow much, much larger and are eaten somewhat like a pomegranate. In Mexico and Malta, I think they're the national fruit; seems like it, anyway.<br />They're quite mild, something like a guava, and full of seeds. I prefer mine sieved so that I get only the pale green jelly and no seeds.
