Their ears are on guard and their sleep is light. The sound of a wet cheerio hitting the kitchen floor would bring them to the "rescue" in seconds.

Jon, excellent imagery! In my pup's case, it's the sound of the dishwasher being opened. He's always ready for the "pre-wash" cycle! :P
